Midwife Led Unit @ Hull Women's and Children's Hospital

CTS worked as Main contractor for Bilfinger to deliver the project at the Hull Women’s and Children’s Hospital Building for the client Hull and East Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust.

Work began on phase in early December, to refresh the staff area and main patient facing areas of the main labour ward. This work took 4 weeks. The entrance ways were reconfigured and staff offices refreshed and facilities upgraded. The works were completed and handed back to the client before the Christmas break.

Phase 2 was handed over to CTS in January. 3 main birthing rooms and other staffing areas were closed for a complete makeover. Months of planning and fine tuning with the design team saw the rooms fully upgraded. The old bathrooms were converted to walk in wet rooms and the birthing rooms fitted out with princess birthing pools. We completed a facelift of the corridors, waiting areas and staff areas, including a triage room and an additional treatment room.

The works comprised of the following:

  •          Full strip out and demolition
  •          Re configuration of rooms and corridors
  •          Full upgrade of the lighting – mood settable LED
  •          Bespoke Joinery – Softened the room to make it feel less clinical
  •          Flooring – Designed throughout
  •          Altro Digital wall coverings
  •          Altro Digital printer door protection
  •          Medical gas relocation/isolation
  •          Full redecoration

The works were successfully handed over in on time and in budget, in March with the Unit being opened by Fatima Allam, whom the centre is named in honour.

The labour ward at Hull and East Yorkshire Women and Children’s Hospital has approximately 6000 births a year.

Their ethos is one which puts women at the centre of their own care; supporting them in making decisions about how they want to give birth whilst ensuring safe and high quality care is maintained.

The labour ward is staffed by a team of experienced midwives and medical staff supported by other members of the multidisciplinary team including anaesthetists, paediatricians, midwifery assistants, theatre staff and ancillary staff including caterer’s housekeeper’s hygienist and domestics

This work has built on the great relationship we have with the Hull Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

We thank all involved for helping to deliver this project.
